Kia ora! I’m Rawinia, one of the faces behind PIKO BU, and I’m excited to share our journey with you. Over the past two years, building this balm business has been a wild ride—filled with challenges and incredible learning experiences.

A Cultural Journey

Starting PIKO BU has connected me more deeply with the whenua (land), nature, and my wairua (spirit). Growing up in the South Island, I have strong ties to Kaikōura, with my pākeha roots and Māori lineage from Ngāti Porou. I’m currently looking to expand our brand and knowledge, aiming to become a Wairua & Rongoa Practitioner to support both physical and spiritual well-being.

My Balmy Partner

My mother-in-law has been instrumental in bringing PIKO BU to life. With over a decade of experience in home naturopathy, she shares her mātauranga (knowledge) generously. The magnesium balm we sell today is her original recipe, known for relieving pain for many, including me! Together, we embrace our shared values, love for nature, and a bit of friendly banter while creating our balms.

PIKO BU - The Business

PIKO BU has grown steadily, thanks to the amazing support from the Kaikōura community. We’re now in three local stores and looking to expand online across Aotearoa, NZ. Our journey began at a tradeshow and quickly blossomed into something special. We take pride in our values—whānau, manaaki, and caring for the land.

Our Practices

We incorporate Māori Tikanga in our processes, using karakia (prayers) during production to ensure each balm is created with love and good intentions. Sustainability is at our core; we use solar power, harvest responsibly, and protect our native flora and fauna. Our pure water source, flowing naturally through our farm, ensures that our magnesium balm is free from chemicals.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited about where PIKO BU is headed! As we continue to learn and grow, we’ll expand our services to enhance people’s health and happiness. Thank you for being a part of our journey!
